Michael S. Olson buys the Ottawa RoughRiders
The Ottawa Rough Riders, the team without an owner, now has Michael S. Olson at the helm. Michael was to be an expansion owner in the 2002 season, but with the financial state of the Rough Riders and the fact that the old owner stepped away from the league, the league set the wheels in motion earlier than expected. "The Rough Riders will be a Canadian team for the remainder of the season; I guarantee you that," said Michael in a news conference at the Hilton in Miami. "The team has been a very good one up until this season. With the fall of the team came financial and other problems. I feel we can make a decent showing for this season. If not, we have many years to come to make this one of the best teams the MLF has ever seen. I don't want to be the next in a long line of owners for this team; I feel three is two too many, and I promise to see this to the end. And the end for me is a championship for this organization." The Rough Riders may not be in Canada next season, according to league rumors. Michael had been granted a franchise in Miami, Florida. The Miami Mustangs are to be playing in the Orange Bowl next season. This could bring one of two scenarios; the Rough Riders will either fold up shop and move to Miami (which a lot of people think will happen since Michael is from the Florida area), or the Rough Riders will fold up completely and Michael will enter a totally new team as an expansion team, using an expansion draft to fill the team. The rumors have been flying strongly that Michael will go for the second one. League approval must be met to be a complete expansion team. Only time will tell which is the fate of the Ottawa Rough Riders.
